Set wellness goals you can achieve

When people want to make changes in their lives they need to set realistic goals. We often fantasise about living the optimum healthy and happy life but the truth is that most of us have no idea where to get started. Here are some tips from Fitness First to guide you to physical and emotional wellness:

1. Be clear and stay focused
You should know exactly what you want and focus your entire energy to get it. Understanding why living a healthy and happy life is important to you and your wellbeing, only you can help yourself to commit, avoid distraction and negative thinking.

2. Discover internal motivation
Find your motivation deep within and do not expect extrinsic rewards. Your discipline and desire will determine your results, so an appropriate mind-set and belief in your own strengths is important, this is where mindfulness comes in. Realise what your strengths are and then work on your weaknesses.

3. Set achievable targets and improve them gradually
Set targets that are achievable to you in your current situation. You need to set mini-targets that lead to a bigger target and have a vision and a timeline to break down what you want to achieve.
For instance, you can start by going to the gym three times a week and working separate muscles groups each day. Gradually add a morning jog or an afternoon walk, they all count.

4. Set a S.M.A.R.T. goal
Whether you want to lose weight, take care of your health, or simply improve your general wellbeing, putting the SMART method into action can help you achieve what you set out to do. A SMART goal is:
S - Specific, significant, stretching
M - Measurable, meaningful, motivational
A - Agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
R - Realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
T - Time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

6. Be patient
