Staying fit, eating healthy and having a positive attitude can go a long way in not only improving your health, but also lowering the risk of cancer. Making fitness a lifestyle can help change how you live the rest of your life – the choices you make today, shape your tomorrow.
One of the key factors is finding a workout you enjoy, so that you stay motivated. Running, strength and conditioning, weight lifting, yoga and group exercise classes are some of the many options available with your Fitness First membership. The intensity and type of exercise doesn’t matter, as long as the habit is regular.
Fitness First believes in tailoring health trends to reduce breast cancer risks:-4
1. When we exercise our body releases endorphins, which have a positive effect on our mental health and creates a ‘happy feeling’ that works to keep us fit.
2. Diet is equally important:
- Eat Healthy Fats. Polyunsaturated fats in many vegetable oils and margarines and monounsaturated fats such as olive oil
- Eat more Phytochemical. Fruits and vegetables contain numerous anti-cancer phytochemicals, such as greens, mushrooms and flax and chia seeds, and anti-estrogenic substances and isoflavones found in soy, peas and beans and lignans found in vegetables, fruits, grains, tea and coffee
- Include calcium and Vitamin D in your diet. Milk, cheese and other dairy foods, green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and okra (not spinach), soya beans, tofu, nuts, bread, and fish such as sardines and pilchards
- Eat a High Fibre Diet. Fibre has some breast cancer protective properties, like limiting glycaemic effects of foods and assisting in estrogen removal
- Say no to alcohol and smoking and watch your weight.
3. Mammographic screening is recommended every two years in women 50 to 74 years old.
